We've made changes

You asked us to do things differently, so we have. We have removed any added artificial colours from our Bakers® food. This means there’s no added artificial colours, flavours or preservatives in Bakers®. We must stress that the artificial colours we used were and remain, perfectly safe for dogs. For more detail, explore the FAQs below.

Why have artificial colours been removed from BAKERS®? +

The colours used in BAKERS® have always been perfectly safe. However we know that many people are reducing the amount of artificial colours they have in their own food so we have listened to our shoppers and taken out the artificial colours in BAKERS®.

What are you replacing artificial colours with and what are non-artificial colours made from? +

We are replacing the artificial colours with colours that naturally occur in nature and which are derived from plant, animal or mineral sources. Through appropriate technical processing (such as heating or extraction), they can then be used in food applications on an industrial scale.

Was there anything wrong with artificial colours? +

There was nothing wrong with the colours we previously used in BAKERS® - they were all perfectly safe for dogs. We know that many people want to reduce the amount of artificial colours they use in their own foods so we’ve listened to our customers and removed them from BAKERS®.

What other changes have been made to BAKERS®? +

We have not made any changes to the recipe when changing to non-artificial colours. BAKERS® still has the same great taste your dog loves. The non-artificial colours we use are completely safe for your pet and are commonly found in human food.

Why have artificial preservatives been removed from BAKERS®? +

We do not use artificial preservatives in our BAKERS® recipes. The preservatives we use are Potassium Sorbate (E202), Citric acid (E 330), Orthophosphoric Acid (E338). They have always been in the BAKERS® recipe. Potassium Sorbate is a potassium salt version of sorbic acid, a naturally occurring polyunsaturated fat. Citric acid is a weak organic acid, found naturally in citrus fruits. Orthophosphuric acid is a colourless, odourless crystal which naturally occurs in rock. These ensure that the quality and safety of the product is maintained for its entire shelf life.

Do you add flavourings to make BAKERS® tasty? +

Digest is used to add flavour to BAKERS®. It is derived from animal-based raw ingredients such as chicken liver, pork fat or beef fat. It is sprayed on to the kibbles to make the food tastier and is part of what dogs love about BAKERS®.

Which products are affected by the change? +

All BAKERS® dry products are affected across all lifestyle and lifestages, as well as Meaty Meals.

When will new stock come through to stores and are there any code changes? +

New stock will start arriving now and there are no EAN code changes. The packs can be identified by the new flash on pack ‘No added artificial colours, flavours or preservatives’.
